The National Education Union is the largest education union in Europe. It has led the conversation on a number of the most pressing issues in education since its formation in 2017, when the unions NUT and ATL joined forces and merged their members. The NEU lead the way on issues within education; pay bargaining, funding, driving policy change in government and ensuring that the voices of educators are heard and the needs of our young people met.
South Tyneside is an active district, with significant increases in membership since our successful PayUp! campaign and strike action. We are always looking to grow further, and welcome anyone looking to get involved in the union, whether as a rep at your school, getting involved in local and national campaigns or with one of our training opportunities.

If you would like get more involved with South Tyneside NEU,
here are some ideas . . .
- Come along to a Branch/District Meeting – Meetings are always on a weekday at 5pm, at a local venue where we catch up on news and actions within the NEU, make decisions for our branch, and discuss any ideas or issues anyone may have. A nice meal and drink is always provided as a thank you for your hard work and support. And we know it can be daunting coming along alone, but we are a friendly lot and promise you a warm welcome, or better still, bring along another member! Check the date and venue of our next meeting on our calendar page.
- Become a rep at your school/workplace – If your workplace doesn’t have a rep already (or even if it does, two heads are better than one!), contact us at southtynesidebranch@neu.co.uk and we can support you through the process.
- Join the South Tyneside NEU team – All officer roles are voted upon each year at our AGM (usually May) for the following academic year. There are also a number roles within our District which are currently vacant, so it is always fantastic when a new member is willing to take on an Officer position. Get in touch if you’d like more information.
- Check your inbox! – The NEU are great at communicating with its members, but in our incredibly busy roles as educators it is easy to skip the emails. But keep an eye out for your South Tyneside NEU Newsletters, and other emails from us (these may appear as ‘Action Network’) for updates on local action and news.
